How did the Servant Leadership Academy get started?
A.
The SLA is designed to meet the leadership development needs of all YMCA staff and volunteers. This includes part-time employees and exempt and non-exempt full-time staff.
Folks who do not work for the YMCA currently, but have a need for quality training, are welcome to attend. All pre-requisite requirements and payment requirements are applicable.
The Servant Leadership Academy (SLA) is a learning and development organization that operates as part of the YMCA of Greater Charlotte. Serving the leadership development needs of staff, volunteers and youth, the SLA provides high-quality learning resources that support and enable the mission of the Y. Through a blend of high touch and high tech development strategies and resources, the SLA will enable the mission of the Y by training current staff and developing the next generation of leaders. Our primary goal is to help the Association attract, develop and retain the talent we need to preserve and advance our mission well into the 21st century.
The Servant Leadership Academy is a division of the YMCA of Greater Charlotte YExperience Team. This team includes professionals who serve as a resource to our branches in all program areas and membership practices. SLA is the vehicle that delivers training to staff to enable them to deliver high quality programs and service.
The fundamental purpose of the SLA is to leave a legacy of servant leaders throughout the Carolinas, Virginia and the region who support and strengthen the mission of the Y.
Developmental programs delivered by and through the Servant Leadership Academy include:
* Regional Training EXTRAVAGANZAs (RTE) Training events conducted throughout the year in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia
* Intern Leaders School: Internships are offered throughout the year in all areas of the YMCA and in all branches of our Association. All internships are coordinated through SLA and includes leadership and skill training for all intern candidates.
* On-Boarding for NEW full-time staff: Offered on a regular basis, this is the first step for new full-time staff to view the overall picture of the YMCA ... locally, nationally, and internationally.
* Charlotte-specific trainings: SLA coordinates many internal trainings and events specific to program or membership areas. These are labeled in the description if offered to Y-Charlotte staff only. If not, anyone is welcome to join in the learning experience.
Through a series of design sessions, the Association defined a servant leader as someone who achieves mission-based results and exhibits the following characteristics:
An emphasis on learning places the responsibility for skill and career development with the participant. The capacity to learn is a very important skill and should be taken seriously by all staff, particularly during times of change. Training is typically event-based and represents a very traditional form of development. Learning is a life-long process that can occur through many different methods like coaching, mentoring, e-learning, action learning, reading and open dialogue. The SLA seeks to strike the right balance of methods depending on the experience and learning style of the leader.
The Servant Leadership Academy was formed in late 2002 in response to a need to develop more leaders throughout the Association and the YMCA movement. A decade of exponential growth in membership, branches and revenue has caused YMCA associations to concentrate on expanding their leadership base. Better preparing current and future leaders is a focus of the SLA.
